The Bridge of Lions

One of the pair of lions guarding the Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine, Florida.
This magnificent beast is one of a pair of marble lions normally found guarding the Bridge of Lions which crosses Matanzas Bay in St. Augustine, Florida. Right now both lions are resting in a warehouse while the bridge is being rehabbed and restored to its original beauty. The postcard below shows what the bridge looked like right after its completion in April 1927.

The postcard celebrates the new "million dollar" Bridge of Lions completed in 1927.
Construction continues as you can see below and it’s quite possible we will be driving across the bridge again as soon as the first of the year. I don’t think the lions will return to their posts at the foot of the bridge until the temporary bridge is removed and the bayfront area surrounding the bridge returns to normal. We are all eagerly awaiting that day.

A recent view of the construction taken from the temporary bridge.

I suppose the refurbishment has cost a great deal more than the original price! Is there a reason for the name Bridge of Lions? Or were the lions somehow there first?
