Virtual Shop on the Corner

We used to have a delightful little bookstore downtown. It was on one of the most visible corners in the downtown area, but because parking was so bad getting to it could be an all-day expedition. It was typical of the tiny, crowded book shops you see in the movies and you could easily spend hours just browsing. This shop – for obvious reasons – focused on local subjects and local writers. Seldom did I walk out of there empty-handed.

As local demographics changed, it became even more difficult for residents to shop downtown and the little bookshop couldn’t survive on tourists alone. The opening of Barnes & Noble in an easily accessible location insured its demise. As much as I enjoy my weekly Saturday morning visits to B&N, I still miss the unique charm of the little shop on the corner.

I haven’t lost my love for books – especially the local ones – so I’ve decided to open my own book shop. It’s not quite what you’d expect in a book shop, but then we are an eccentric bunch here at the Creek. Moultrie Creek Outfitters could best be described as a bookstore and tackle shop. What else would you expect from folks who raise bottle trees and plastic flamingos? You’ll notice a new Outfitters tab at the top of each page to quickly take you there. We have departments for Local Color, Research Tools, Tech Tools and Graphics & Scrapbooks. There are some great genealogy books in Research Tools – including a copy of Wiki for Dummies for those of you who want to collaborate at WeRelate. I ordered my copy yesterday.

Like any good shopkeeper, I’ll occasionally make recommendations – Gloria Estefan’s new album, 90 Millas, is divine – and I’ll be happy to answer questions or track down specific titles/lures for you. I hope you’ll stop by regularly – to browse, to chat and maybe even place an order.
