Making a List

Diigo provides many ways to organize your bookmarks including tags, groups and lists. Lists offer a unique way to collect, arrange and share a series of bookmarks. Once created and populated, a list can be shared by email, as a link from a web site or blog, published to a social site or presented as a slideshow using Diigo’s own WebSlides. Lists are a great way to spotlight a special collection of bookmarks.

Here’s how easy it is to build and manage a list.

Create a List

From your Diigo toolbar or dashboard, choose My Lists to see all the lists you’ve created. Each list is indexed and includes stats showing how many items are contained in each list and how many times the list has been viewed.

Now, click on the Create a new list button.

The list details page appears where you provide the information about the list. Give a name to your list in the Title field and Diigo will automatically use that name to create a web address for the link. You can edit this if you wish. Now, choose whether this is a public or private list and select a category for it. While Title, Web Address and Category are the only required fields for your list, adding Keywords and a Description make it easier for people to find your list. Choose the order you want new items to be added to the list, then click on the Create the list button.

Your list has been created. Now it’s time to add items to it.

Add Bookmarks to the List

When bookmarking a page in Diigo, add any highlights, description and tags as you normally would, then check the Add to a List option and select the appropriate list from the drop-down menu. Finally, click on the Save button.

Managing Your List

Although difficult to see here, each entry in your list includes a menu of options: Preview, Top, Bottom, Up, Down, Remove from List. The Top, Bottom, Up and Down commands allow you to rearrange the order your items appear in the list. You can also drag items, but this can be confusing in longer lists.

You can choose to organize your list into sections.

Sharing Lists

From the Actions menu, you can email all or part of your list to all your friends or specific individuals. The check boxes to the left of each item determine which items will be included in the message. The check box next to the Action menu will select all items in the list.

Post to a Blog

If you’ve set up your blog in Diigo, you can easily create a post from the list. Had you included descriptions or highlighted text when you saved the bookmark, this information would also be included in the blog post entry.

Notice that I’ve selected to post my entry as a draft. This will allow me to include additional edits and/or graphics before I publish my article.

Publish to Social Networks

Click on the Publish button to the right of your list page and choose from a growing list of social services to publish a link to this list.

WebSlides

Click on the WebSlides button to view a slideshow displaying each of the pages saved in your list – in the order they have been arranged. Your WebSlide presentation will have its own unique web address which you can forward to others to view.

Once a viewer clicks on the Play button, each slide is presented for 10 seconds before moving on to the next. Viewers have a set of controls – shown at the bottom of the screen to stop/start the show and to change the viewing speed. The popup index allows you to quickly jump to specific slides within the presentation. WebSlides can be customized to change the default viewing speed and even add background music or a narration to the slideshow.

Diigo’s List feature offers users a lot of useful functionality with minimal effort. If you would like to spotlight a series of web pages or blog articles, this is a very easy way to do it. Once again, Diigo delivers!
