Blogging with Diigo

In addition to all the other great tools for annotating and bookmarking web pages, Diigo has some awesome features for sharing those sites you’ve discovered. For bloggers, the Send to Blog feature is a especially useful. Once you’ve set up your blog, you can easily create a post from any web page you’re visiting.

Assuming you’ve already installed the Diigo toolbar in your browser, here’s everything you need to know to get blogging with Diigo.

Create a Post

You’re visiting a site with information you’d like to pass along on your blog. If you’d like to quote from the site, select the text you’d like included in the quote, right-click and choose the Highlight option from the popup menu.

If you also want to bookmark this page, choose the Bookmark and Highlight command instead of just Highlight. You will need to tag and save your bookmark before proceeding with your blog commands.

Notice that your selected text is now highlighted. From the Diigo toolbar’s Send dropdown menu, choose the to Blog command.

Diigo takes you to the Edit Blog Post page. On the left you’ll see any blog sites you’ve set up in your Diigo account (more on this later). Your highlighted text, along with linked title and site name of your source page, has been pasted into a simple editor. You can submit your post as is or include any additional information or formatting changes straight from this editor.

Here’s the same article once I’ve made some changes and it’s ready to send.

Since I have multiple blogs configured in my Diigo account, I need to choose which one I’m sending this post to and select the appropriate category. I’ve chosen (checked) the Family Matters blog. I can also choose to have it immediately published or posted as a draft. I personally prefer to send it as a draft so I can add tags and preview the result before it goes live.

When you’re ready click on the Send button.

Diigo uploads the content then displays a page similar to this.

Here’s what it looks like in my editor at Family Matters. From here I can make additional changes, add tags, preview the article and choose whether to publish it now or schedule it for later.

Here’s the published result.

Setting Up Your Diigo Account for Blogging

To set up your Diigo account for blogging, log in at Diigo then click on your account menu (will display your username) and choose the Tools command. Click on the Send to Blog option in the left sidebar. It will take you to this page. Now click on the + Add a new blog option.

Enter the address to your blog, then click the Next button.

Enter your blog username and password, then click on the Add New Blog button.

If your blog allows multiple authors, it would be a good idea to create an author account just for use with this connection. Should this account be compromised, it would not be as destructive as having your admin account hacked.

Your blog will be added to your list of blogs. The green Valid reference means that Diigo is able to connect to your blog with the login credentials you used.

For people who manage their blog software on their own site – installed WordPress comes to mind – you may have to provide additional information to get your blog configured correctly. For an installed WordPress blog, choose MetaWeblogAPI Enabled Blog for Blog Type and the complete path to your xmlrpc.php file for the Endpoint.

Now that your blog is configured, you’ll find many instances where this Diigo blogging tool can be put to good use. Before too long you may even wonder how you ever survived without it.
