OpenOffice.org Version 3 Arrives

Monday the open source office suite OpenOffice.org releases version 3. Since it already supports the OpenDocument standard, the big thing I’m thrilled to see is better support for the Mac. Other features include:

  • Document sharing allows multiple users to edit the same document (Writer, Calc and Impress) at the same time. The document will need to be stored in a location that is accessible to all users.
  • More support for PDF creation including more control over editing, the ability to set resolution restrictions on printing and to password protect your PDFs. You can even encrypt the PDF you create, requiring a password to decrypt the file.
  • Enhanced XML support for footnotes, field values and headings greater than six when exporting content from OOo to XHTML.
  • Improved image cropping in Impress and Draw.</li.
  • Supports extensions. You can now select from a growing number of extensions to add even more functionality to the suite. From template paks to wizards to dictionaries, you can find just the tool you need at the OpenOffice.org Extensions site.

While the site won’t have version 3 listed until tomorrow, they have already distributed the files to their mirror sites so if you can’t wait . . .
