eBooks and Other Mobile Goodness
I recently read that Amazon’s Kindle is back-ordered something like 11 weeks. Have they gone through the Christmas stock already or did they not realize the demand? Whatever the problem, if you’re looking for an e-book reader for Christmas, you might take a look at the iPod Touch. My 16 GB iPod Touch was $60 cheaper than the Kindle and with the addition of the Stanza app, I have a huge selection of books to read.
Stanza can read PDF, text, RTF, Kindle and the new epub open eBook standard. In addition to the iPhone/iPod Touch version there is also a desktop version for both Windows and Mac users. AND, you can share your eBooks between the desktop and mobile platforms. But there’s more! Both versions of this delightful application are absolutely free! You can download the desktop version at the Lexcycle site.
Fictionwise eBooks just announced they are licensing support for their eReader format for use with Stanza. I have been using Stanza to read books from Project Gutenberg, but would be interested in some low cost current books. A quick check of the Fictionwise site showed several good Michael Crichton books in the $7.00 to $8.00 range.
So, now I can listen to music and audiobooks when I’m driving or otherwise occupied, I can play games, find an address, get directions, check the weather and tides, keep up with appointments, check my mail and Twitter, browse the Web, watch movies AND read books all on one device. Life is good.
