Everyday Tools: Newsreader

As I noted in a recent blog – and also using Genealogy Blog Finder as an indicator – there are a lot of genealogy blogs out there. When you count the genealogy blogs, tech blogs, military blogs and news sites I follow daily, the count is close to 200. Do I visit each of these sites daily? weekly? monthly? No – they come to me.

I use a newsreader application to keep up with the latest news, weather and blogs in a simple and organized manner. A newsreader allows me to subscribe to the RSS feeds from blogs and other sites I want to follow. On a schedule I determine, the newsreader checks each of my subscriptions for new content and, if it finds something, pulls it into my reader’s queue. When I have a few minutes to catch up on the latest, I open my newsreader and scan the collected postings. I choose which articles I want to read – and I even have options for saving specific postings for later followup.

Rojo Reader

There are many kinds of newsreader applications and you can choose the one that suits you best. I use an online reader – Rojo – because I can access it from home, work or anywhere I can get online. Other advantages include not having to manage a lot of files on my desktop and the ability to choose how much of the article (headlines only, summary or full-text) I will see.
