Research Tips Roundup

Maybe we’re all staying close to the air-conditioner vent these days, but it seems like lots of research help has gotten posted in the last few days. Here are a few I found useful:

  • Susan Kitchens has a great article describing her recording kit with details on all the components and why they are necessary. In addition to adding these items to my Christmas wish list, I sent this on to my public affairs folks at work to give them a kick start on their multimedia efforts.
  • Miriam does it again! She built some great forms to help organize her research and has shared them with all of us. The timeline form will help me straighten out my Savannah Henrys and the records checklist is one of those d’uh forms that’s so obvious once you see it. It will get a lot of use in my research efforts.
  • Sally’s scanning tips is a must-read article. She concentrates on how to protect the originals as we scan them. Another article has some great ideas for naming the resulting digital files.

Thanks for your kind words about my forms, Denise! Good luck in straightening out your Savannahs!

Thanks for the link and comments. I’m glad you found it helpful. Would be curious to know which element that I described was the best new information. It’d help me in future writing to know where to aim. :)

Strange: I worked very hard on that article and yet due to other things, seemingly abandoned work on the site for a while (hem, still abandoned. Must take that up stat) due to other work concerns and (yippee!) play afterwards. The recording kit did go on the family outing to North Rim of Grand Canyon and picked up all the campfire singing. Haven’t listened to it yet, tho.
