Windows Digital Storytelling Tools from Serif

While I do spend a lot of time raving about Mac and iOS apps, there are some very impressive Windows apps to discuss too. One company worth looking at is Serif. They have a growing collection of photo, video and graphic apps. Here’s a look at several with interesting digital storytelling potential . . .

PagePlus [$92.99 – instant download] offers professional level desktop publishing capabilities at an affordable price. This includes the ability to layout your own family history books in print, PDF and ebook (ePub and Kindle) format ready to submit to the bookstore(s) of your choice. In addition to books you can do newsletters, flyers, cards, brochures and much more. You’ll find lots of support too, with interactive guides that walk you through the application’s many features.

There are a number of photo-related apps including their premier photo editor, PhotoPlus x6 [$89.99 – box or download], Photo Projects [$7.99 – box or download] for creating scrapbooks, photo books, cards, even collages and AlbumPlus X4 [$29.99 – download] to help organize your photo collection.

CraftArtist 2 Professional [$39.99 – box and download] is more than just a scrapbooking platform. It’s built-in photo editor has a cut out feature that lets you pull an object off its background – giving you the ability to create your own clipart from digitized images of your family emphemera. The stamp tool can turn objects into stamps which you can then use over and over – another way to create custom graphic elements from your family archives.

Serif offers free versions of many of their apps so you can get a feel for their basic operation before you spend your money. Of course the premium features are only available on the paid versions.
